Bhayangkari merupakan organisasi istri anggota Polri yang lahir atas gagasan Ny. HL. Soekanto pada tanggal 17 Agustus 1949 di Yogyakarta, dan sebagai Ketua Pengurus besar dijabat oleh Ny. T. Memet Tanumijaya.

Pada tanggal 19 Oktober 1952 dilaksanakan konferensi Istri Polisi yang dihadiri oleh 27 perwakilan daerah, dimana telah diputuskan untuk bersatu dalam gerak perjuangan melalui wadah tunggal organisasi persatuan istri Polri Bhayangkari dan tanggal tersebut ditetapkan pula sebagai Hari Anak-anak Kepolisian.
